| The Valley Line single track railroad between Elkhart and Columbia, Ohio, was Millionaire H.E. Bucklen's hobby. |
The Valley Line railroad entered Bristol on Vistula street
and ran through town, continuing its eastward route through
Middlebury, La Grange, Mongo, and Angola and into Ohio, during its relatively
brief lifespan from 1905-1918.
The line was powered by horses, gasoline, electric and steam and included passenger,
express and package service.Valley Line is considered by historians to be the
least known, but most unique of the old rail-lines.
Most of the Bristol photos show the electric trolley cars, dating from about 1909.
The Vistula Street Station in downtown Bristol housed several
variety stores, including a candy & variety store, creamery & grocery,
once the rail-line shut down in 1918, after the death of the founder, Herbert E. Bucklen.
It was replaced with a bank building in 1960.
